About Steve Jobs
Steven Paul Jobs was born in San Francisco on February 24, 1955, and adopted as an infant by Paul and Clara Jobs. After finishing high school in Cupertino in 1972 he enrolled at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. He dropped out after the first six months but stayed on for another 18 months or so as a drop-in, and he took a calligraphy class that, he said, came back to him ten years later when the first Macintosh was designed.
On April 1, 1976, he signed the agreement that formed Apple Computer Company, with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne. On January 24, 1984, he introduced the Macintosh at Apple's annual shareholders' meeting in Cupertino. In 1985 he left Apple and founded NeXT, and in 1986 he bought the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm, which became Pixar. He married Laurene Powell in 1991, and in 1995 Pixar released "Toy Story," the first animated feature made entirely with computers.
Apple bought NeXT, and in 1997 he returned, becoming interim CEO in September. Apple introduced the iMac in 1998, the iPod in 2001, the iTunes Music Store in 2003, the iPhone in 2007 and the iPad in 2010. In 2006 Disney announced it would acquire Pixar, with Jobs to join Disney's board. In November 2010 Apple announced that the Beatles' music was coming to iTunes, and he said: "It has been a long and winding road to get here."
In June 2005 he gave the commencement address at Stanford, and ended it with "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." He resigned as Apple's CEO on August 24, 2011, was elected chairman of the board, and Tim Cook was named CEO. He died at home in Palo Alto on October 5, 2011, at 56. His family said in a statement: "Steve died peacefully today surrounded by his family."
